The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), commonly known as the Met, is the territorial police force responsible for law enforcement in Greater London, excluding the City of London which is policed by the City of London Police. Founded in 1829 by Sir Robert Peel, the Met is one of the oldest police services in the world and remains one of the most recognised, operating under the guiding principle that the police are the public and the public are the police.
With over 43,000 officers and staff, the Metropolitan Police Service is the largest police force in the United Kingdom. The Met is headquartered at New Scotland Yard on the Victoria Embankment and is overseen by the Mayor of London through the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC). The Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police holds responsibility for the strategic direction of the force, with operational command delivered across 32 London boroughs through Borough-based Policing (BBP) and a wide range of specialist commands including the Specialist Crime Command, Specialist Operations, and the Professionalism Directorate.
